Orange Line Walkers is taking a break!
For several years, Arlington County sponsored a lunchtime fitness group each fall and spring along the Orange Line (Metro) corridor. Though the program developed a devoted cadre of dedicated participants, many of whom returned year after year, enrollment never reached the levels envisioned at its inception. Rather than continue to operate the program with its existing structure, staff is looking at ways the program might be restructured to better serve the community.
KEEP ON WALKING!
Just because the program is taking a hiatus does not mean you can not start or continue to walk during your lunch hour! Below are a few suggestions for creating or maintaining a daytime walking regimen.
- Find other walkers in your office or neighborhood. You don't need a crowd; a single, committed walking buddy or handful of colleagues is all it takes. Post a notice on your lunchroom bulletin board, or send around an e-mail.
- Use your community listservs, or create one; it's easy to do (and free!) through Yahoo.com for example.
- If you sign up three or more people, make it a contest! The person who comes to the most walks each season gets a prize (like being taken out to lunch after the last walk of the season!)
- Use a pedometer to motivate yourself. Set a goal each week, and reward yourself (only not with food!) for meeting it.
- For variety, pick up a new Arlington Bikeways map (at the Courthouse and other locations) or download it from the Internet. Also check out the new Bike and Walk Options map.
- Using the map, sketch out five different routes, just on paper, and commit to following a new one each week.
- Pay a virtual visit to any one of the County's "urban villages" and load up on great ideas for interesting places to walk.
- If you are in the Ballston-Virginia Square area, you can also catch the free ART 67 lunch loop (bus) to one end of the loop, then walk back!
