County Programs
Among many programs under the umbrella of the County impact walkability, a few stand out. Neighborhood Conservation is a program unique to Arlington that provides incentives (in the way of project funding) for communities to take on a role in shaping their own futures.
The Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program, whose primary goal is to provide safer environments for walkers, bicyclists and motorists in County neighborhoods, has been growing rapidly since its inception in 1999, in partnership with efforts in Neighborhood Conservation.
Improving the pedestrian environment and managing other modes of travel along many of the County's busiest thoroughfares is the domain of the Arterial Transportation Management (ATM) program.
A major partnership between Arlington Public Schools, Arlington Department of Public Works and Arlington Police Department is providing Safe Routes to Schools.
And the County's emerging Public Art Program promises to make Arlington's streets ever more pleasing to the eye, and nurturing of the soul.
Arlington County is participating in "Street Smart" 2007, an education and enforcement campaign to promote pedestrian safety across the region.
